古時舞者用彩錦纏頭，當賓客宴集，賞舞完畢，常贈羅錦給舞者為彩，稱為「纏頭」。對於青樓歌妓，賓客也往往賜錦，或以財物代替。後把送給歌伎或妓女之財物稱為「纏頭」。

回人以白布纏頭，稱為「纏頭回子」。
