春秋時、楚莊王陳兵於洛水,向周王朝示威。周派使者慰勞,“楚子(楚莊王)問鼎之大小輕重”,意思是說楚莊王有奪取周朝天下的意思(見《左傳·宣公三年》)。後來用“問鼎”指圖謀奪取政權,也指在某方面取勝書證

春秋時，楚莊王征伐陸渾的戎人，並於周室疆域上檢閱軍隊。周定王派遣王孫滿慰勞，楚莊王便探問九鼎之大小輕重。見《左傳．宣公三年》。因九鼎為夏商周三代的傳國寶器，楚莊王問鼎有圖謀君位之意。後用以指覬覦王位，謀取政權；或指謀取最高榮譽、地位。
