秦朝末年，项羽在鸿门宴请刘邦时，项庄藉表演舞剑想刺杀刘邦。于是张良至军门，樊哙问情况如何时，张良回答道：「甚急。今者项庄拔剑舞，其意常在沛公也。」典出《史记．卷七．项羽本纪》。后遂以项庄舞剑指在表面事物之下隐藏了另外的意图。
