法律上指嫌犯被逮捕或自首时，警方办案人员通常向该警察长官报告，请准留下嫌犯，便于侦查，此情况称为「留置」。法律规定留置不得超过二十四小时，届时应依查得之证据，决定将嫌犯移送法办或予以释回。
