汉字一个字起头的音叫声母,其余的音叫韵母。大部分字的声母是辅音声母,如行(xíng)的起头字母“x”,只有小部分的字拿元音起头(就是直拿韵母起头),它的声母叫“零声母”,如“爱”(ài)、“鹅”(é)、“欧”(ōu)等字英文 initial consonant (of a Chinese syllable)

对韵母而言，指标声的字母。如国语注音符号的ㄅ、ㄆ、ㄇ、ㄈ等。

形声字的声符，常为形成诸形声字读音之母，故称为「声母」。如仑为伦、沦、仑、 纶、轮诸字的声母。
