春秋时、楚庄王陈兵于洛水,向周王朝示威。周派使者慰劳,“楚子(楚庄王)问鼎之大小轻重”,意思是说楚庄王有夺取周朝天下的意思(见《左传·宣公三年》)。后来用“问鼎”指图谋夺取政权,也指在某方面取胜书证

春秋时，楚庄王征伐陆浑的戎人，并于周室疆域上检阅军队。周定王派遣王孙满慰劳，楚庄王便探问九鼎之大小轻重。见《左传．宣公三年》。因九鼎为夏商周三代的传国宝器，楚庄王问鼎有图谋君位之意。后用以指觊觎王位，谋取政权；或指谋取最高荣誉、地位。
