國語辭典古代以干支紀日或紀年。甲為十干之首，子為十二支之首，干支次第相配，可配成甲子、乙丑、丙寅……癸亥共六十種，統稱為「甲子」。亦作為一週紀的名稱，如用以 紀年，則一週紀六十年稱為「一甲子」。《續漢書志．第一．律曆志上》：「記稱大橈作甲子，隸首作數。二者既立，以比日表，以管萬事。」
泛指年歲。唐．杜甫〈春歸〉詩：「別來頻甲子，倏忽又春華。」《聊齋志異．卷四．胡四相公》：「嘗問其甲子，殊不自記憶，但言：『見黃巢反，猶如昨日。』」
